Search for drywall repair prices and you'll find national averages that don't survive contact with an actual Richmond estimate. Here's how pricing really works in our market in 2026 — the ranges we see across thousands of local repairs, and the factors that push a job toward the top or bottom of each range.
Richmond Drywall Repair Price Ranges (2026)
- Nail pops & small dings (batched): $150–$300 for a visit handling several.
- Small holes (doorknob-size to fist-size): $150–$400 each, less when batched.
- Large holes / access cuts (plumber left a rectangle in your wall): $250–$550.
- Wall cracks, re-taped and refinished: $200–$500 depending on length and texture.
- Ceiling repairs: $350–$900 — overhead work, texture matching, and staging push ceilings above wall prices.
- Water damage repairs: $400–$1,200+ depending on how much board comes out (see our water damage service).
- New installation, hung and finished: roughly $2.00–$3.50 per square foot of board.
- Popcorn ceiling removal: $2–$4 per square foot of ceiling, skim coat and priming included.

The Five Factors That Move the Price
1. Texture matching
A patch in a smooth wall is straightforward. The same patch in knockdown or orange peel takes texture application and blending, which adds time and skill — often $75–$150 on a repair. It's the difference between a repair you can find and one you can't.
2. Height and access
Anything overhead costs more than the same repair at eye level, and two-story foyers or vaulted ceilings add staging. Richmond's subdivision floor plans love tall spaces; the estimate will show the access cost plainly.
3. Batching
The biggest money-saver available to you. A contractor's cost is dominated by the visit — setup, drying cycles between coats, cleanup — not the tenth minute of mudding. Fixing eight problems in one visit can cost little more than fixing three separately. Walk the house and build the full list before you call.
4. What's behind the wall
Water-damaged repairs can grow when the cavity turns out wet or moldy, and older Richmond homes sometimes hide plaster, rock lath, or odd framing behind a “simple” hole. A good estimator prices what's likely and tells you the contingency up front.
5. Plaster vs. drywall
Plaster repairs in the Fan, Church Hill, or Bellevue take different materials and more labor than modern board — typically 1.5–2× a comparable drywall repair. More in our guide to plaster vs. drywall in older Richmond homes.
Red Flags When Comparing Quotes
- No written estimate. A verbal “probably around…” becomes a very different invoice.
- One-coat promises. Proper finishing takes three coats with drying time between. Same-day patch-to-paint on anything sizable means corners are being cut — and will show.
- No mention of texture. If the quote doesn't address matching your wall texture, the patch will announce itself forever.
- Suspiciously cheap ceilings. Overhead work priced like wall work usually means the staging or the skim coat is missing from the scope.
